Consumer Information for Interstate Moves

Interstate moving is federally regulated, and you have specific rights as a customer of any licensed mover — including us. This page summarizes those protections and links to the official government documents.

Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move

Federal regulations (49 CFR Part 375) require every interstate mover to provide customers with the FMCSA booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move before your move. It explains estimates, valuation coverage, pickup and delivery windows, weighing procedures, payment rules, and the claims process.

Read it on the official FMCSA consumer site, Protect Your Move (fmcsa.dot.gov), or ask your MC Movers coordinator for a copy at any time — we provide it with every interstate estimate.

Ready to Move? brochure

The FMCSA's Ready to Move? brochure is a short pre-move checklist: red flags to watch for when choosing a mover, questions to ask before booking, and a summary of your rights. It's available on the Protect Your Move site. For planning help, see our moving costs guide and moving guides.

How to verify any mover (including us)

  1. Ask for the company's USDOT and MC numbers. Ours are on every page of this site: USDOT #2538365, MC #00882866.
  2. Look the numbers up in the federal SAFER database or with our FMCSA lookup tool. Confirm the company is authorized as a carrier and its authority is active.
  3. Check whether you're dealing with a carrier or a broker — brokers resell your move to another company. Our guide to carriers vs. brokers explains the difference and why it matters.
  4. Get every estimate in writing, and be wary of quotes that are far below the others.

Valuation coverage, in plain English

Released-value protection is included with every interstate move at no charge, as required by federal law. It covers 60¢ per pound per article — so a 10-pound item is covered for $6 regardless of its actual value.

Full-value protection is an optional upgrade under which the mover repairs, replaces, or pays the current value of lost or damaged items. If you own high-value items, ask about it before moving day and declare them in writing.

Complaints and disputes

If an issue with any interstate mover isn't resolved directly, you can file a complaint with the FMCSA through the National Consumer Complaint Database or by calling 1-888-368-7238. For issues with an MC Movers move, contact support@mc-movers.com first — see our company information page for the claims process.
